SPIRAL SEA takes its name from the real sea
from which we all emerged: the sea of spacetime and other dimensions yet to be fathomed.
We who have collaborated to bring SS into being, are aiming for
a useful forum in which to explore the universe as we are slowly
coming to understand it--at many levels, from the cosmic to the
biological to the quantum mechanical to the warped woofery of
superstring theory.
In pursuit of this ambitious goal, we have
arranged to invite accountants, astronomers, biologists, baseball
players, economists, ecdysiasts, fathers, fractalologists, geneticists,
gemologists, mathematicians, mothers, photographers, physicists,
scientists, sports fans, xerologists, xylophonists, Zambizi descendants,
zeitgeist propounders, and all manner of folk in between, to
present their thoughts, both factual and fictional, on the general
topic of understanding life in the Spiral Sea.
We hope the coming issues will spark your
own interest in thinking through the meaning of life to modern
humanity, in the light of all that you may have learned from
your passage through it thus far. If you are also moved to pen
an essay or story to capture your vision for others to enjoy,
by all means have at it. And if you are futher moved to send
it to us here at Spiral Sea, we await your
enlightenment.

This first issue brings
together a fairly broad spectrum of minds, in keeping with our
intended eclectic approach. C.V.
Mobbs
is
a biochemist and molecular genetics professor in professional
life. In real life, he and his wife are raising their young daughter
to tolerate her parents' penchant for the thespian world of off-Broadway.
["Way off-Broadway," Charlie urges clarification.]
CVM has published in Analog, and about a billion scientific
journals [I said "about," Charlie!], regularly assails
his friends and aging classmates' ears with insightful discussions
on most topics, and is therefore imminently qualified to tackle
his current subject
Jack Egan (that
name sounds familiar), following Willy Ley's dictum, has had
a number of careers, approximately one new one every five to
seven years. In this incarnation, he discourses on the application
of ill-understood science to social administration in The
Politics of Uncerainty and other meanderings.

Paying the bills
As with any enterprise providing a service to its practicioners,
Spiral Sea achieves its global presentations through the use
of modern technology. In support of making that means available
to our authors and artists, we pay the bills--in part through
earnings from our Catalog
of relevant products and services offered by ourselves, our members,
and a select few outside parties. By all means, check it out.
The commercial products of a culture tell us much about its spirit
and direction. |
