Larry Ledlow wasn't always buried up to his ears in cold white stuff. Before moving to his bushpilot dad's favored haunts, Larry spent years in Texas, and a few other climes. He is an avid ham radio operator, and has both edited and written for some of the best-known amateur radio magazines. We are a bit vague on his professional life timeline, but it is clear from his adventurous efforts with the UN High Commission on Refugees during the 1990s that he likes to put his skills to good use.
In 1994 Larry signed on with the UN effort to bring stability to war-ravaged Bosnia and Croatia, serving as a communications expert. His job was to travel about the recovering areas, setting up reliable radio and telephone links for the UN aid and peacekeeping agencies.
IN WAKE OF THUNDER: CROATIA & BOSNIA 1994 recounts some of his experiences there.
In A KOSOVO LOG: 1999, Larry describes the way it was to return to the Balkans after the NATO campaign to end the "ethnic cleansing" of Muslims from Kosovo by Serbia. Once again, his job was to re-establish communications for peacekeeping forces and aid agencies undertaking the incredibly difficult tasks of maintaining the peace while facilitating the rebuilding of a land shattered by a decade of violent war.
SPIRAL SEA is most appreciative of Mr. Ledlow's permission to publish his journals. Especially in light of the current terrorist crisis, it is important for Americans to clearly show how they have done more than most countries to attempt to help the world toward an age of rationality.
Now, in a section entitled
THE VIEW FROM 65 NORTH
Larry also invites us to listen to another, somewhat more philosophically prosaic side of his life--whereto he returns from his far-ranging treks: Alaska.
So, please join him...
